The Practical Motorhome Hall of Fame: Gulf Stream Vista Cruiser Mini (1995-1999)

Before the rise in popularity of European Liner-class offerings, palatial American RVs enjoyed significant UK market penetration.

In the 1990s several converters decided to develop something to satisfy the increasing European demand for RV toys and a slide-out, in a European-sized package. Chinook and Winnebago were early adopters. However, the first and most appealing of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based coachbuilts was from Nappanee-based Gulf Stream Coach Inc.

The company was started in the 1970s by Jim Shea, and his descendants remain at the helm today.

It also continues to employ Native American, Amish and Mennonite woodworkers. This is why Cruiser Minis were unusual among American motorcaravans in that their interiors didn’t feature traditional angular Shaker-style ‘ranch’ cabinetwork.

Instead, a more contemporary vibe was achieved by using radiused doors – not wrapped composite board – but varnished solid wood. There were two motorhome layouts, both featured a Luton overcab double bed, ahead of a forward lounge sofa in a (UK nearside) slide-out.

Vista Cruiser Mini 4230 has a double Pullman dinette opposite, whereas the 4231 places the kitchen there instead. In addition, 4231 has a permanent rear corner double bed with comfort station adjacent. To contrast, the 4230 features a full-width rear washroom and UK nearside kitchen.

See what I had to say about another recent inductee into the Hall of Fame too, the Manhattan Motorcoaches Tardis (2001-2003).
