Owning a motorhome is all about having the opportunity to travel whenever you want, wherever you want – you’ve got everything that you need on board, so all you need to do is hit the road and you’re free to enjoy your adventure. With a sat-nav or map at hand, you can explore the very best of Europe at your own pace, wherever the road takes you.
Of course, you can escape the everyday, but sometimes it’s hard to leave your concerns behind, especially when you’re away from home for some time. That’s backed up by recent research by experts in home security Reolink, which says that 70% of people feel comfortable leaving their home unattended for a few days, but that figure falls to 58% for a week-long trip and 44% for a two-week holiday.
And this is particularly relevant to motorhome owners – according to that Reolink research, of those staying in a motorhome, caravan or campervan, more than half (56%) say they also worry about theft or security when their vehicle is left parked up and unattended, too.
Stay connected on your travels
So what can you do to ease your mind? It’s best to be prepared and think about possible eventualities before you go. Here are Practical Motorhome’s top tips to bear in mind for every motorhoming trip to keep your trip on the right track:
• Consider fitting additional security devices such as a wheel clamp or steering wheel lock to your vehicle
• Make sure you carry copies of all essential documents, including passports and insurance documents
• Park in well-lit areas, and never leave valuables on show.
And there are simple additional steps you can take, including installing a camera on your vehicle – and we’d suggest taking a look at the Argus MagiCam from Reolink.
This clever and compact piece of battery-powered kit comes with a magnetic mounting pad, so you can attach it to your motorhome either when you’re pitched up onsite or when it’s away in storage, allowing you to keep an eye on it when it’s out of your sight.
The camera works both inside and outside, thanks to its IP67 weatherproof housing, and has up to an incredible nine months of battery life – it offers crystal-clear night-vision, too.
Keep your property protected, too
So that’s your motorhome covered – but you’ll also want to keep your house safe while you’re away on your adventures.
Reolink offers some great advice on this, from country manager Ali Park: “Our advice is to try and make sure your property looks occupied for the period you are away, which takes a little forward planning. And enlist friends and trusted neighbours to keep an eye on the place, to make sure nothing looks unusual.”
Reolink’s handy tips include:
• Make your property look lived in with automatic switches to turn your lights on when it becomes dark
• Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries, and try to redirect parcels to a neighbour.
• Be mindful of posts or photos you share on social media which could identify you as being away on holiday.
For additional reassurance you could install the compact Reolink Argus MagiCam – and for even greater security there’s also Reolink’s 2nd Generation Battery Doorbell. It offers a wealth of features to help you stay aware of anyone at your property’s door, giving you sharp, reliable, 2k images to keep you fully informed while you’re enjoying your holiday.
Zone Loitering Alert will let you know if someone remains in a defined area for too long, and you can speak through the doorbell to anyone outside, masking your voice if you like – even while you’re pitched in your ‘van on a sunny French campsite.
Which all adds up to true peace of mind – no matter how far you travel in your motorhome.
