Four men are in custody this week after police in York managed to stop a motorhome that was in the process of being stolen.
North Yorkshire Police’s roads policing, operational support and response teams were already actively looking for a cloned red Peugeot 207 in the early hours of Friday morning (3 July) when a report came through of an attempted theft of a van, where the suspects had run off when the alarm went off.
Just over an hour after this, another report came through saying that the red Peugeot the police were after had been seen driving in convoy with a white Fiat motorhome, which it was soon confirmed had just been stolen from an address in New Earswick.
The incident, which could leave you thinking about motorhome security and ways to protect your ‘van, saw officers then spot the motorhome, heading away from York on the A64, and onto the A1 (M). The driver failed to stop for police and carried on driving into West Yorkshire.
Working in conjunction with West Yorkshire Police, a stinger device was used, which successfully deflated the tyres of the motorhome as it travelled south towards Darrington. The driver was arrested at the scene.
Meanwhile, back in York, officers located the cloned car in the Osbaldwick area, and a further three arrests were made.
The men, aged 35, 31, 30 and 20, remain in custody for questioning in relation to multiple offences including theft of a motor vehicle.
Witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage are urged to contact North Yorkshire Police. Or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Please quote reference 12260124584.
In other recent news, motorhomers have been warned to ensure they are using their air-con appropriately to avoid a £110 fine. The warning, which came from the RAC, was issued at a time when many vehicle owners will be using their leisure vehicles to enjoy the heat.
